Digital dental scan in Kozhikode

A digital dental scan uses a small handheld intraoral scanner to build an accurate 3D model of your teeth and gums in a few minutes, without impression paste. We use the scan to show you what we see, plan treatment with you, and design crowns, aligners and other appliances.

What happens during treatment

  1. 1

    Examine

We start with a conversation about your concerns and a clinical examination of your teeth and gums.

  2. 2

    Scan

A slim wand is moved gently around your teeth, capturing thousands of images that form a 3D model on screen.

  3. 3

    Review together

We rotate and zoom the model with you, pointing out wear, cracks, gaps or crowding as we go.

  4. 4

    Plan

Together with any X-rays needed, the scan helps us explain your options and agree a treatment plan.

What is a digital dental scan?

For decades, recording the shape of someone’s teeth meant biting into a tray of soft impression paste and holding still while it set. A digital scan replaces that step. An intraoral scanner is a slim, handheld wand with a camera at its tip. As it moves over your teeth, it captures thousands of images every second and stitches them into a detailed 3D model on screen.

The result is a precise record of your teeth, gums and bite. It can be stored, compared over time and sent digitally to a dental laboratory, without the risk of a physical impression distorting or being damaged on the way.

A clearer conversation about your teeth

One of the most useful things about a 3D dental scan in Kozhikode is simply seeing your own mouth. Most people have never had a proper look at the backs of their teeth or the edges of old fillings. On a large screen, we can rotate the model, zoom into a worn edge or a small crack, and show you exactly what we are talking about.

That makes treatment decisions easier. Instead of describing a problem, we can point to it, compare options side by side and agree a plan that you understand before anything begins.

What the scan is used for

  • Aligners: as a registered Invisalign provider, we use the scan to plan Invisalign treatment and order your aligners.
  • Crowns and bridges: the scan records the prepared tooth so the laboratory can make a zirconia or ceramic crown that fits closely.
  • Smile planning: the model forms the starting point for smile design, helping us plan shape and proportion before treatment.
  • Monitoring: scans taken months apart help us track wear, gum recession or tooth movement.

Digital smile preview

For aligner treatment, the scan can be used to create a digital smile preview: an animation showing how your teeth are planned to move, stage by stage. It helps you understand the likely course of treatment and ask questions early. It is a planning guide rather than a promise of the final result, and your dentist will explain what is realistic for your teeth.

What to expect on the day

If you have been looking for an intraoral scanner dentist in Calicut, a scan at our Eranhipalam clinic usually takes only a few minutes as part of a longer consultation. There is nothing to prepare beforehand. If you have braces, removable dentures or a retainer, simply bring them along so we can scan or check them too.

Recovery

There is no recovery time. The scanner does not touch your teeth with any force, and you can eat, drink and return to your day straight away.

Digital scan questions

Is a digital scan the same as an X-ray?

No. An intraoral scanner uses light to record the surfaces of your teeth and gums and involves no radiation. X-rays show what is inside the teeth and bone, so your dentist may still advise them alongside a scan.

Does the scan hurt or make you gag?

The scan is not painful. The wand is small and is moved around your teeth in sections, so most people who gag with impression trays find it much easier to tolerate, and we can pause at any time.

How accurate is a digital scan?

Modern intraoral scanners are highly accurate and are routinely used to make crowns, bridges and aligners. Because the image is checked on screen during scanning, any gaps can be rescanned immediately rather than retaking a whole impression.

Can I see what my smile could look like after treatment?

For some treatments, such as aligners, the scan can be used to create a digital preview of planned tooth movement. It is a planning tool rather than a promise of an exact result, and your dentist will explain what is realistic for you.

Do I need a scan if I just want a check-up?

Not always. A scan is most useful when planning treatment or when we want a record to compare against in future. Your dentist will advise whether one would help.
