What is biofilm, and why remove it?
Biofilm is the scientific name for plaque: a living, sticky layer of bacteria that forms on teeth, gums, fillings and implants every day. It is soft at first, but it holds on firmly and regrows within hours of brushing. When it stays in place, it causes gum inflammation, cavities and bad breath, and over time it hardens into tartar.
A traditional cleaning focuses on removing tartar. Biofilm therapy focuses first on the soft biofilm itself, because that is what drives most gum and tooth problems. Removing it thoroughly, including below the gum line and around restorations, helps the gums stay healthy.
How guided biofilm therapy works
The approach we follow is often called guided biofilm therapy, a structured cleaning protocol used by dental clinics around the world, and one we follow here in Kerala. The word “guided” refers to the disclosing step: a harmless dye shows where biofilm is hiding, so we can clean those areas precisely and you can see them too.
The cleaning itself uses an air-polishing device. A fine jet of powder, air and warm water moves over the tooth surface and lifts biofilm and stains without the scraping of hand instruments. Because it is so fine, it reaches between teeth, around brackets and into shallow gum pockets. A slim ultrasonic tip then removes any hard tartar that remains. Many patients searching for airflow teeth cleaning in Kozhikode are looking for exactly this.
Stain removal and a fresher-looking smile
Tea, coffee, paan and tobacco leave stains that cling to the enamel. If you are looking for stain removal in Calicut because of daily tea or coffee, air-polishing is an effective option that is gentle on the enamel. Your teeth return to their natural shade, not a whiter one. If you would like a lighter shade after that, we can talk you through teeth whitening.
Who benefits most?
- People with implants, crowns or veneers: the low-abrasive powder cleans around them without scratching. If you have dental implants, regular biofilm removal helps protect the gum and bone around them.
- People with braces or aligners: brackets and attachments trap plaque in places a brush struggles to reach.
- People with gum disease: regular maintenance cleaning is key to keeping it stable.
- Anyone with sensitive teeth or gums: many find it a calmer experience than traditional scaling.
Biofilm therapy or routine scaling?
Both remove plaque and tartar, and both are effective when done well. A routine scaling and polishing suits many people with healthy gums. Biofilm therapy is often a better fit if you have restorations, braces, sensitive gums or heavy staining. After an examination, your dentist will advise which suits you, and you can switch between them at future visits.
